Elementary
School ESL Program |
This program is designed for students who have had little or no
previous instruction in the English language. At this level, the
stress is on vocabulary closely related to the students’ immediate
environment. The goal is to develop basic communication skills
through activities which are used to create a natural setting in
which the student becomes familiar with day-to-day situations. The
curriculum covers elementary structures and the
development of reading and writing skills.
English-language learners may pick up conversational
English, or Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS), within two
years, but school language, or Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency
Skills (CALPS), may take 5 to 7 years, or even longer (Collier, 1987; Cummins,
1984) |
